Capturing Geometry Rationale for Collaborative Design1
نویسنده
چکیده
When an artifact is designed the typical output consists of documents describing the final result of a long series of deliberations and tradeoffs by the participants of collaborative design (AKA concurrent engineering) teams. The underlying intent and logical support (i.e.the rationale) for the decisions captured therein is usually lost, or is represented at best as a scattered, difficult-to-access collection of paper documents and designers’ recollections. This is particularly true for geometric, as opposed to preliminary, design rationale. Rationale information is critical, however, for important collaborative design functions such as team memory, design retrieval and negotiation. This paper describes an evolving web-based tool designed to greatly improve capture and access of preliminary and geometric design rationale in concurrent engineering teams, based on a marriage of rationale capture, world-wide web, CAD and feature-based design technology.

Capturing decisions and rationale from collaborative design
Design is, at its heart, a decision-making process. The decisions, alternative approaches considered, and the reasons behind the final choices are known as the Design Rationale (DR). The DR is usually not explicitly captured, at least not in an easily retrievable form. One way to reduce the effort in capturing rationale is to obtain the DR from unstructured documents and import it into a Ration...
متن کاملSoftware Architecture Rationale Capture through Intelligent Argumentation
A growing model for software architecture defines it as a set of principal design decisions which describe the system. These design decisions need to be made by resolving design issues in a collaborative environment that helps software architects to design the architecture of a system. The architecture design decisions are usually made based on experiences since there aren’t defined methods and...
متن کاملCapturing Communication and Context in the Software Project Lifecycle
Capturing design process knowledge is a complex, multi-disciplinary problem. With the advent and increased acceptance of digital computer supported cooperative work tools this project studied how engineering collaboration might be captured and archived to support engineering lifecycle activities. To improve project communications among software engineers and create structured email archives, we...
متن کاملCapturing Outlines of Planar Generic Images by Simultaneous Curve Fitting and Sub-division
In this paper, a new technique has been designed to capture the outline of 2D shapes using cubic B´ezier curves. The proposed technique avoids the traditional method of optimizing the global squared fitting error and emphasizes the local control of data points. A maximum error has been determined to preserve the absolute fitting error less than a criterion and it administers the process of curv...
متن کاملPolarisation assessment in an intelligent argumentation system using fuzzy clustering algorithm for collaborative decision support
We developed an on-line intelligent argumentation system which facilitates stakeholders in exchanging dialogues. It provides decision support by capturing stakeholders’ rationale through arguments. As part of the argumentation process, stakeholders tend to both polarise their opinions and form polarisation groups. The challenging issue of assessing argumentation polarisation had not been addres...
